Summary

The European Institute for Hydrogen Safety HySafe is the reference institution for integrated efficient hydrogen safety research, education, training and innovation. It facilitates the maintenance and further development of the infrastructure for hydrogen safety research. It develops and updates a strategic research agenda related to hydrogen safety.

Stakeholders benefit from using the best of the complementarily tuned infrastructure, unique guidance for using state-of-the-art tools and from easy access to the expertise gathered in the European Institute for Hydrogen Safety HySafe human capital. Therefore the interested institutions will preferrably mandate or even join this institute to address hydrogen safety problems in an integrated and optimised manner rather than to repeat expensive and partially inefficient fragmented research on their own.

Besides efficient research coordination the European Institute for Hydrogen Safety HySafe provides the environment for an enhanced communication in the "community" and provides guidance for an advanced learning curve. The basic documentation is continuously consolidated and communicated via the dissemination efforts of the International Conference ICHS, the Safety Handbook BRHS, and the e-Academy.

The European Institute for Hydrogen Safety HySafe provides a unique discussion forum for experts to support international standardisation and regulation activities in the development of a reliable performance based approach.

The activities are coordinated in an open democratic manner and financed by member fees and small contributions from the coordinated international projects.

All this will support the safe introduction and expansion of the energy vector hydrogen.

Vision, Mission and Objectives

Vision

Hydrogen will be introduced as a safe energy carrier.

Mission

To facilitate the development and dissemination of hydrogen safety knowledge by being the European focal point for hydrogen safety.

Objectives

The objectives to approach the vision and mission are:

  • to facilitate the maintenance and further development of infrastructure for hydrogen safety research
  • to provide support to EC, HFP, JTI and RC&S bodies in hydrogen safety issues
  • to provide or facilitate consolidated educational and training frameworks (academic & technical)
  • to disseminate knowledge via communication/information platforms to all stakeholders
  • to initiate and promote coordinated research in the field of hydrogen safety

Introduction

Starting point and framework

The Hydrogen Economy

''Description of the way towards the hydrogen economy and its market

Main line of argumentation:

  1. Generic hydrogen economy description; Hydrogen is important as the only practical energy storage, as stoage hydrogen supports the broader usage of renewable power, sun, wind... Flexibility of the energy market with the storage function and diverse pathes for production and usage.
  2. Hydrogen security is important for the hydrogen economy; Each energy carrier has a potential for uncontrolled, accidential energy releases, therfore security is the prerequisite for the establishment of the new technologies based on hydrogen as an energy source. Hydrogen has a very different profile compared to established gaseous energy carriers.
  3. Potential within the hydrogen society; Forecasts, predictions etc
  4. Trends and demands from the hydrogen society; anticipation for future needs like guidance in safety relevant issues, scientifically based and clear information of the public, support of agreed perfomance based standards and regulations referring these harmonised standards.
